Myths of Ancient Egypt

 

                                      OSIRIS

Osiris is perhaps the most easily recognised of the gods. He was always dressed in white mummy's clothes: he wore a beard and held in his crossed arms the crook, the flail (whip), and sometimes the sceptre - all signs of authority and power. Most often he was depicted as the judge of a dead person's soul.

As god of the underworld, Osiris became respected above all other Egyptian gods. He was responsible for receiving reports from other gods of the recently dead person's soul as it progressed through the trials of the underworld, and for rendering final judgement on the fate of the soul. He was usually attended by Isis and Nephthys and assisted by Thoth and Horus, who spent part of their time in the underworld, having earthly responsibility as well. The jackal-headed god Anubis was responsible for  embalming and generally preparing the body and, as such, was Osiris's chief assistant.

Ο Ηράκλειτος και ο Υπερλεττρισμός

  '' 'Ετσι, αντί να εννοεί, δηλαδή να δίνει νόημα προς αποκάλυψη και διερεύνηση, η σύγχρονη γλώσσα έγινε ουσιαστικά ενδεικτική με την έννοια ότι υποδεικνύει και διατάζει. Έτσι βρίσκεται στους αντίποδες του Λόγου του Ηράκλειτου, που δεν υποδεικνύει αλλά προτείνει ένα νόημα, το οποίο ο άνθρωπος πρέπει να αρχίσει να αναζητά.

Από την πλευρά τους, ο λεττρισμός (lettrisme), o υπερ-λεττρισμός (ultralettrisme), όλες οι μορφές α-λογοτεχνίας και αγράμματης λογοτεχνίας, αγωνίζονται να αναλύσουν τις ίδιες τις λέξεις προκειμένου να ανασυνθέσουν από αυτές άγνωστες, ξεκινώντας από το γράμμα.

'Αλλοι πηγαίνοντας πιο μακριά, επιχειρούν να αναλύσουν το ίδιο το γράμμα, προκειμένου να μας παρουσιάσουν κάποια άγνωστα αλφάβητα που αντικαθιστούν τη γραφή με το γραφισμό. Από τη μέθη των συγκυριών περιμένει κανείς επίσης κάποιαν έκσταση.''

Περί διαλογισμού

     

              ΣΚΕΨΗ, ΜΗ-ΣΚΕΨΗ ΚΑΙ Ο ΠΑΡΑΤΗΡΗΤΗΣ       

                          ΩΣ ΔΗΜΙΟΥΡΓΟΣ ΤΟΥΣ 

Ο χρυσός κανόνας στο διαλογισμό μας διαβεβαιώνει ότι δεν υπάρχουν τελικά κανόνες για το πότε και πώς ακριβώς θα βιώσουμε το πεδίο αυξημένης συνείδησης που ονομάζεται διαλογισμός.

Έχει όμως καθιερωθεί η άποψη ότι στο διαλογισμό εισερ-χόμαστε σε μια κατάσταση δίχως σκέψη. Επομένως, ο διαλογισμός είναι κάτι πέρα από τη σκέψη, δεν συντε-λείται μέσα σε αυτή, αλλά εμπεριέχεται στην κενότητα.

Alchemical voices

  As used by its most distinguished representatives, alchemical literature possesses a suggestive language, rich in allegories, homophony and word-play which, often through the mediation of Jakob Böhme's theosophical works, has had a profound effect on the poetry of Romanticism (Blake, Novalis), the philosophy of German idealism (Hegel, Schelling) and modern literature (Yeats, Joyce, Rimbaud, Breton Artaud).

  Many voices, even from within their own ranks, were raised against the 'obscure idioms' of the alchemists. And their own account of their communication technique hardly sounds more encouraging: ''Wherever we have spoken openly we have, actually, said nothing.  I can see by my watch, without taking my hand from the left grip of the cycle, that it is eight-thirty in the morning. The wind, even at sixty miles an hour, is warm and humid. When it's this hot and muggy at eightthirty, I'm wondering what it's going to be like in the afternoon.

 In the wind are pungent odors from the marshes by the road. We are in an area of the Central Plains filled with thousands of duck hunting sloughs, heading northwest from Minneapolis toward the Dakotas. This highway is an old concrete two-laner that hasn't had much traffic since a four-laner went in parallel to it several years ago. When we pass a marsh the air suddenly becomes cooler. Then, when we are past, it suddenly warms up again.

 I'm happy to be riding back into this country. It is a kind of nowhere, famous for nothing at all and has an appeal because of just that. Tensions disappear along old roads like this. We bump along the beat-up concrete between the cattails and stretches of meadow and then more cattails and marsh grass.

Bull of Dharma

Bones

 

Θα μιλήσω για ένα βιβλίο που αντάμωσα. Λεγόταν ''Ο Δρόμος του Βουβαλιού". Το αγόρασα γιατί μου άρεσε ο τίτλος και γιατί ήταν Ζεν. Σκίτσα με ανθρωπάκια και ταύρους πολύ ωραία, σχόλια πολύ επιτυχημένα επίσης, αναφορικα με τις ζωγραφιές. Αμέσως αναρωτήθηκα γιατί δεν σχετιζόταν με τα κοάν: ο λόγος, ανακαλυψα αργότερα, δεν είχε να κάνει μόνο με τις δυο κύριες σχολές του Ζεν, το Σότο και το Ρίνζάι, αλλά με την ίδια την ύπαρξη του βιβλίου και μια φιλοσοφία ιδιαίτερη που με ενθουσίασε επειδή, μέχρι εκείνη τη στιγμή, νόμιζα τα κοάν πολύ περίπλοκα για ανάγνωση.

Είχα μια κάποια εμπειρία του βουβαλιού, από κοάν όμως δεν σκάμπαζα γρι. Ώσπου σκόνταψα και στο 'Zen Flesh, Zen Bones' από το οποίο οι εικόνες και η μετάφραση των σχολίων. Η μοναδική διαφορά, καθ' όσον αφορά εμένα, είναι ότι ο ''Δρόμος του Βουβαλιού'' σχετίζεται και με άλλων ανθρώπων την εμπειρία, την οποία, βέβαια, δεν έχω βιώσει εγώ.

Nirvana

ΕΡΜΗΤΙΚΑ ΚΕΙΜΕΝΑ

 Με τον όρο Ερμητικά εννοούμε μια σειρά αρχαιο-τάτων κειμένων, γραμμένων αρχικά στην ιερατική γλώσσα των Αιγυπτίων, δηλαδή με τα γνωστά ιερογλυφικά σύμ-βολα. Το βασικό μέρος τους λέγεται ότι γράφηκε αρχικά από τον Θωθ, την εποχή του βασιλιά  'Αμμωνα. Ο Θωθ έχει πολλά κοινά με τον Ερμή. 'Ηταν προστάτης των γραμ-μάτων, των τεχνών και της ιατρικής, σύμβουλος του 'Οσιρη και δάσκαλος της Ίσιδος. Οι 'Ελληνες τον ταύτιζαν με τον Ερμή, τον γιο του Δία και της Μαίας.

A suggestion for Meditation

Meditation can be practised through the koans ''Mu'' and ''A Beardless Foreigner'' or, through an alternative set, namely ''Hyakujo's Fox'' and ''Gutei's Finger''. The above suggestion refers to the so called Flesh of the ''Gateless Gate'' as described in the book ''Zen Flesh, Zen Bones''. It also applies to the Bones, the pictures of the ''10 Bulls'' in the same book. That is: ''The Search for the Bull'' and ''Catching the Bull'', or, ''Discovering the Footprints'' and ''Perceiving the Bull''.

ADVICE TO AN ANXIOUS RULER

"A wealthy ruler came to Chuang Tzu, with a troubled expression on his face. ''Why do you look so anxious?" Chuang Tzu asked. The ruler replied: " I have studied the methods of the ancient rulers, and have tried to follow them. Yet I cannot avoid failure. That is why I look anxious." Chuang Tzu said: "The elegant fox and the graceful snow leopard live in the mountain forests, that is where they are at peace. Since they both possess beautiful fur, they are completely fearful of humans. So they only go out at night to seek food, and they plan their trips with great care; during daylight they remain in their lairs. Nevertheless they are never entirely safe; they are always in danger of being caught in a trap or a net. So like you they always have an anxious expression. In their case their beautiful fur is the  cause of anxiety; in your case it is the land that you rule. The fox and the leopard cannot rid themselves of their fur; but you are free to rid yourself of your  kingdom. Your people would not suffer; on the contrary they would quickly learn to rule themselves."

Ο ΦΙΛΟΞΕΝΟΥΜΕΝΟΣ ΚΑΙ Ο ΟΙΚΟΔΕΣΠΟΤΗΣ

Οι όροι ''φιλοξενούμενος" και "οικοδεσπότης" είναι βασικοί όροι του Ζεν και υποδηλώνουν αντιστοίχως το άτομο που προσκολλάται στα φαινόμενα, ή τον κατώτερο εαυτό, την προσωπικότητα, και το άτομο που έχει αντιληφθεί την αλήθεια ή την αμετάβλητη φύση του, δηλαδή, τον ανώτερο Εαυτό. Η ανάλυση σχετικά με τον οικοδεσπότη και τον φιλοξενούμενο αφορά, επίσης, το επίπεδο εξέλιξης του δασκάλου και του μαθητή.

O Βούδας

"Ο Πάουλ Ντόισεν (Paul Deussen) σημειώνει ότι ο θρύλος του Βούδα δεν μας παρέχει μαρτυρίες γι΄αυτό που αρχικά ήταν, αλλά για εκείνο που πολύ σύντομα κατέληξε να είναι ο Βούδας. Άλλοι ερευνητές  προσθέτουν ότι η ουσία του βουδισμού βρήκε τη βαθύτερη έκφραση της στο πεδίο του θρύλου και του μύθου.

  Οι απαρχές του βίου του ανάγονται στον ουρανό. Ο Μποντι-σάτβα (που έμελλε να γίνει Βούδας, όνομα που σημαίνει Αφυπνισμένος) κατόρθωσε, χάρη στις συσσωρευμένες άπειρων προηγούμενων ενσαρκώσεων, να γεννηθεί στον τέταρτο ουρανό των Θεών.

  Από τα ύψη του ουρανού όπου βρισκόταν, κοίταξε τη Γη και επέλεξε τον αιώνα, την ήπειρο, το βασίλειο και την κάστα όπου θα ξαναγεννιόταν για να γίνει Βούδας και να σώσει τους ανθρώπους."

Το Ζεν και η Αμαρτία

Μέσα στην αίθουσα ο δάσκαλος είπε: ''Οπαδοί του Ταό, με την εκτέλεση των Πέντε Φοβερών Αμαρτημάτων, η απελευθέρωση μπορεί να επιτευχθεί."
Ένας μοναχός ρώτησε: "Ποια είναι τα Πέντε Φοβερά Αμαρτήματα;"
- Να σκοτώσεις τον πατέρα, να βλάψεις την μητέρα, να χύσεις το αίμα του Βούδα, να διαταράξεις τη γαλήνη της Σάνγκα και να κάψεις γραφές και αγάλματα.
- Ποιος είναι ο πατέρας;
- Η βασική άγνοια είναι ο πατέρας. Μέσα στη συγκεκριμένη καρδιά, δεν μπορείς να βρεις τον τόπο της εμφάνισης ή της εξαφάνισης. Σαν την ηχώ που ανταποκρίνεται στην κενότητα και έτσι φθάνει παντού. Όταν δεν έχεις τι άλλο να αναζητήσεις, αυτό ονομάζεται 'φόνος του πατέρα'.
- Ποια είναι η μητέρα;
- Η σφοδρή επιθυμία είναι η μητέρα. Αν εισέλθεις στην περιοχή της επιθυμίας με εστιασμένο νου και βλέπεις παντού τη κενότητα των μορφών και ότι πουθενά δεν υπάρχει κάτι στο οποίο να προσκολληθείς, αυτό είναι το 'βλάψιμο της μητέρας'.
- Τι είναι το χύσιμο του αίματος του Βούδα;
- Στην περιοχή της αγνότητας, αν δεν δημιουργήσεις και την παραμικρή σκέψη, τα πάντα είναι σκοτάδι. Αυτό είναι το 'χύσιμο του αίματος του Βούδα'.
- Τι είναι η διατάραξη της γαλήνης της Σάνγκα;''
- Αν με εστιασμένο νου κατανοήσεις ότι τα πάθη, αυτά που σε δεσμεύουν, είναι κενά και χωρίς αληθινή ύπαρξη, τότε διαταράσσεις τη γαλήνη της Σάνγκα.
- Τι σημαίνει το κάψιμο γραφών και αγαλμάτων;"
- Αν κατανοήσεις ότι οι αιτιώδεις σχέσεις είναι κενές, ο νους είναι κενός και η Ντάρμα είναι κενή, και σε μιά στιγμή τα αποκόβεις όλα προκειμένου να τα υπερβείς και δεν έχεις τίποτα πλέον να αναζητήσεις, αυτό είναι το κάψιμο γραφών και αγαλμάτων.

SPECIAL TREATMENT

Joshu, also known as Chao-Chou was born in 778. When he first met Nansen, Joshu enterd the master's room in the monastery. Nansen was lying down, and his first question to Joshu was: 

''Where have you come from?'' 

''From the Jui-hsiang temple'', replied Joshu. (''Jui-hsiang'' means holy image.)

''Do you still see the holy image?'' Nansen asked.

''No, I don't,'' replied Joshu, ''I only see the Tathagata lying down.''

At this, Nansen got up, saying, 

''Are you a monk who has a master or one without a master?''

''With a master,'' replied Joshu.

''Who is your master?'' Nansen asked.

''Early spring is cold,'' said Joshu. ''I am so glad that you are well.''

Nansen called the senior monk and said, '' Give him special treatment.''

A Blue Fire

The alchemists had an excellent image for the transformation

of suffering and symptom into a value of the soul.

A goal of the alchemical process was the pearl of great price.

The pearl starts off as a bit of grit, a neurotic symptom or 

complaint, a bothersome irritant in one's secret inside flesh,

which no defensive shell can protect oneself from.This is

coated over, worked at day in day out, until the grit one

day is a pearl.
