AN INTRODUCTION TO TRANSPERSONAL PSYCHIATRY

''Transpersonal psychiatry, therefore, is psychiatry that seeks to foster development,
correct developmental arrests, and heal traumas at all levels of development, including
transpersonal levels.
It extends the standard biopsychosocial model of psychiatry to a biopsychosocial-spiritual one in which the later stages of human development are concerned with development beyond, or transcendent of, the individual. The meanings of the terms transpersonal and spiritual must be sharply differentiated from the meaning of the term religious.
Religious refers to the belief system of a specific group, whose members usually gather
around specific contents and contexts that contain some transpersonal elements.
Spiritual refers to the realm of the human spirit, that part of humanity that is not limited to bodily experience.''
